Embarking on the Garden Route in South Africa is like driving through a postcard come to life. This iconic stretch of road, winding along the southeastern coast, offers a perfect blend of dramatic landscapes, charming towns, and exhilarating adventures. Here’s a thrilling account of my journey along the Garden Route, complete with must-see stops, overnight stays, and essential tips for fellow road trippers.
Our adventure began in Cape Town, a city known for its stunning beauty and vibrant culture. After picking up our rental car – a sturdy SUV perfect for comfort and versatility – we headed east toward Mossel Bay, the official start of the Garden Route.
Mossel Bay is a coastal gem with a rich maritime history. We stayed at a charming guesthouse overlooking the Indian Ocean, enjoying the serene views. Don’t miss the Diaz Museum and the exhilarating shark cage diving experience, which sets the tone for the adventure ahead.
Leaving Mossel Bay, the next stretch took us through rolling hills and coastal vistas to Knysna. This leg of the journey is filled with scenic viewpoints, perfect for impromptu photo stops.
Knysna, nestled between lush forests and a serene lagoon, quickly became a favorite. We spent two nights here, exploring the Knysna Heads, hiking in the Knysna Forest, and indulging in fresh oysters at the waterfront. Our stay at a cozy bed and breakfast right by the lagoon offered stunning sunset views that are simply unforgettable.
A short drive from Knysna brought us to Plettenberg Bay, known for its pristine beaches and outdoor activities.
Plett, as it’s affectionately known, is a haven for nature lovers. We visited Robberg Nature Reserve, where a hike along the peninsula offered breathtaking ocean views and encounters with seals and seabirds. The beachside accommodations here are perfect for soaking in the coastal vibe.
Continuing our journey, we reached Tsitsikamma National Park, the adventure hub of the Garden Route.
This park is a playground for thrill-seekers. We spent two nights at the Storms River Mouth Rest Camp, where the sound of crashing waves was a constant companion. Highlights included the canopy tour through the indigenous forest, the suspension bridge at Storms River Mouth, and kayaking up the Storms River Gorge.
From Tsitsikamma, we drove to Jeffreys Bay, the surfing capital of South Africa.
Famous for its perfect waves, Jeffreys Bay is a laid-back town with a strong surfing culture. We stayed at a beachside lodge, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. Even if you're not a surfer, the Dolphin Beach is perfect for sunbathing and beachcombing.
The final leg of our journey took us to Port Elizabeth, often considered the end of the Garden Route.
Known as the "Friendly City," Port Elizabeth offers beautiful beaches and a rich history. We spent our last night in a boutique hotel in the Summerstrand area, exploring the Donkin Heritage Trail and relaxing on Hobie Beach.
The best time to drive the Garden Route is during the South African summer, from November to April, when the weather is warm and perfect for outdoor activities.
A comfortable SUV or a spacious sedan is ideal for this trip, providing enough space for luggage and comfort for the long drives. Ensure the vehicle is in good condition and has a reliable GPS system.
Navigation: A GPS or reliable maps are crucial. Cell signal is generally good, but having offline navigation can be handy.
Supplies: Carry snacks, water, and a first-aid kit. There are plenty of towns along the route, but it’s always good to be prepared.
Clothing: Pack layers. The coastal weather can change quickly, and evenings can be cool.
Book your accommodations in advance, especially during peak season. There’s a range of options from luxury hotels to budget-friendly hostels and charming bed and breakfasts.
Road Safety: Drive on the left side of the road. Adhere to speed limits and be cautious of wildlife crossing, especially in the more remote areas.
Weather Conditions: Weather can change rapidly along the coast. Be prepared for sudden rain and adjust your plans accordingly.
