Tavira : highlights

A beautiful start of your adventure around Tavira will be guaranteed by the Arab Quarter where you’ll find a 13th-century stronghold, namely the Moorish Castle. Located at a stone’s throw from this highlight is another religious edifice, namely Igreja da Misericórdia. It is one of the finest instances of Renaissance architecture in the area. The building was constructed in the 16th century.

Driving and parking in Tavira

How can you see the biggest number of landmarks in the shortest period of time? And how to do it comfortably and conveniently? Renting a car is the answer. The wide variety of car rental companies located in each Portuguese city and at international airports will allow you to choose a car that suits your needs the most.

If you are searching for a free parking spot, you should leave your car by the river, between the railway bridge and the old bridge. From there, it will be only a short walk to the Old Town. In the heart of Tavira traffic is mostly restricted so it’s literally impossible to find a spot for your vehicle. What’s more, there is a free parking lot with a capacity of about 1,000 cars located at the Gran Plaza shopping centre. However, the mall is located at a certain distance from the central area.

Tavira can be easily reached by following A22, N125, or N397 roads depending on the direction you’re coming from. However, remember that many roads around Portugal have toll gates so you should be prepared to familiarise yourself with the toll system beforehand. This won’t be a greater hindrance if you rent a vehicle equipped with a transponder. Such a device allows you to pay the tolls without the need to stop at each gate.
